on her way to the Peace Pub. Two people forcibly placed her inside a large American car, over her objections. From the parking lot of the American Embassy she was led directly into an interrogation room, with handcuffs on her wrists. In the elevator, her eyes briefly rested on her American captors, however they looked away and did not make any eye contact with her nor did they speak with her regarding the circumstances of her arrest. While sitting in the interrogation room about an hour, with the handcuffs still on her wrists, she waited while her interrogators studied her through the one-way mirror. Since she was aware that the interval was probably part of the "psychological preparation for interrogation", Nili catnapped, resting her head on her hands. After a long while, the door suddenly opened, and Investigator Jeffrey Cox suddenly entered the room, waking Nili from her slumber. "Why did you kidnap me?" Nili asked. "We ask the questions here," Jeffrey Cox rudely answered. After a brief silence, he began to question her. "Do you know a man by the name of Richard?" "Yes, he is my friend." "What kind of things do you do with him?" "He is a friend, a good friend, nothing more". A sharp slap suddenly landed on Nili's cheek. Her nose began to swell, and tears unwillingly welled in her eyes, mainly tears of indignity. "Did you connect him to the Jewish underground? What is your connection to him?" "I have no connection, nothing. I am a singer at the Peace Pub." Another slap landed on her face. This time, Nili was ready for it. "Do you know that you have gotten Richard into trouble, Richard, an innocent guy who came to help you, the Jews, and who is now the subject of an interrogation by the American intelligence agencies? Not only did you get him into trouble, you also entangled the United States government." "What, what will happen to him?" Nili mumbled. "It is almost certain that tonight or tomorrow he will be put on a plane to the United States, to be interrogated. I suppose that he will shortly end his military career, in disgrace. He succeeded in ensnaring the United States government in espionage intrigues, and undermining the Palestinian rule. It is almost certain that you have succeeded in ruining the party for your fellow Jews." "Richard was only my friend, and he did not have nor does he have any connection to anything. All of your suspicions are the intrigues of an Intelligence Officer named Mahmoud, who tried to hurt me and to make me into his slave, and Richard protected me from him". "You probably thought to yourself, here is an innocent guy, let's catch him, go back with him to the United States, leave the State of Palestine for good, hitch a ride on the back of this stupid American. Well, here I am, officially informing you that you will never see him again. Not today, not next year, and not in 20 years. We will never allow you to enter the United States." Now it was Nili's turn to become incensed, and her eyes blazed with anger when she told the interrogator: "Richard met me and courted me, not I him. He is a true friend and a good friend of mine, and I think that as an American, you should be ashamed today by your treatment of an innocent and honest American's civil rights". Jeffrey laughed and said: "Richard might be a civilian, but he is first of all a soldier, and as such he has certain duties and rules of behavior, especially in this region and in the present political situation." "Richard never asked anything of me, nor did I ask of him, only our friendship. As for your hinting as though I hunted him for purposes of espionage or personal advantage, you can be ashamed of yourself." Afterwards, Jeffrey Cox, the interrogator, left the room, and the good interrogator, Brown, entered. At the end of her interrogation, Nili asked for a pen and some paper, and wrote a letter. She deposited a letter to Richard in the hands of Brown, the interrogator, and swore him to deliver the letter to Richard. "I know that you will probably open the letter and read its contents, but I don't care. I only ask you, since "I will never see him again", as your previous interrogator colleague promised me, to deliver this letter to him. Swear to me that you will personally deliver this letter to him. Imagine yourself in Richard's place". The interrogator Brown swore, and a gleam of honesty shone in his eyes. After about an hour, Nili found herself on Hayarkon Street, at one of the back entrances to the American Embassy. Her wrists still ached from the contact of the handcuffs with which she had been shackled during most of her interrogation. A cold autumn wind froze her back when she went out into the gloomy night. Only much later did she discover that the Peace Pub had burned down on that same night, under vague circumstances, while she was being interrogated at the American Embassy. When she approached the pub, she found Mike standing outside with his faithful assistant, rubbing their hands together in order to stay warm. The fire had completely destroyed the building. Only one short hour later, the first rain of the season began to fall, in a brief sprinkle, extinguishing the remainders of the fire, and leaving the place one large, black stain of soot.
